We are using the method invented by Totus Solus.
Our guild uses a combination of set DKP awards, prices and 'Tiers'.
Players are awarded DKP for the following three things:

On Time to Raid: +5 DKP
Killing a Boss: +10 DKP
Ironman (Staying for an entire raid): +5 DKP
First Kill: +10 DKP
Whipe Tries: +20 DKP

When an item drops players are then able to purchase the item using the
DKP that they have earned. We keep a price table so people know how
much DKP items will cost (example).

To decide who should have the opportunity to purchase the item first,
we use Tiers. Tiers are groups of players who are in a similar range of
DKP (we use ranges of 50 points). For example, the lowest Tier would be
players with 0-50 dkp, the second Tier 51-100 dkp, the third 101-150,
etc. (example) When the item drops, all players in the highest tier
(those with the most dkp) are given the chance to purchase the item. If
multiple players in the tier want to purchase the item, they get to
roll for it, the winner getting the right to purchase. If no one in
that tier wants the item, or is willing to pay the cost of the item,
the item moves down a tier. This repeats until someone wants to
purchase the item. When the winner purchases an item, it usually pushes
them a tier or two down, giving new players the opportunity to move up
the tiers.

Heres a few examples of how all this works out.

Example:

Lets say you're in Molten Core and the Giantstalker's Leggings drop.
All hunters in the highest tier are given the first chance to purchase
it. Two hunters need the leggings so they both roll out of 1000. The
winning hunter than gets to spend the 50 dkp for the item. Since the
winning hunter just paid 50 dkp, he has dropped down a tier and won't
be up for first consideration for the next hunter drop.

Example:
The raid is in Molten Core again and the expensive Talisman of
Ephemeral Power drops, which is worth 100 DKP. No one in the highest
Tier is willing to pay that much, so the next tier down is given the
opportunity. Again, no one in this tier wants to make the purchase so
it drops to the third tier down. Finnally in this tier someone wants to
purchase the item for 100 DKP, cuasing them fall 2 tiers down.

Final Note:

We don't award DKP to players until AFTER a run is complete (when the
log file is uploaded). However, DKP that players spend is deducted
IMMEDIATLY via the website (and not logged using the addon). This
allows us to use the WebDKP.com listings during the middle of raids
(using alt+tab) to determine who is in what tier and also allows
players to fall down tiers as soon as they spend their DKP on an item.
